Springdale Road Paving Project Continued (Friday 31st)

Here are some more shots of the work being done in Springdale Road by Raymond Hill with Hill & Hill Construction. The staff will return on Monday and weather permitting, complete this job on Monday or Tuesday, November 4th.

West Russell Street Tree Line Clearing

The Street and Sanitation department led by Oscar Hoskins and Victor Jordan went to West Russell Street this morning to clear the tree lines in the 400 Block. Not long ago, a wind storm caused limbs to fall onto the power line and ripped the meter center from a resident's home. She complained that something needed to be done to protect her from future expenses like hiring an electrician for the crisis created by the falling limbs.

We used the city's boom truck to lift employees more than 40 feet into the air and slowly and methodically trim the tree line. We exercised extreme caution and prudence in our approach to solving this problem.

We also raised the tree clearance level on a vacant lot in that same block to assure that the residents could see across the vacant lot. This was indeed a safety concern.

The slide show below is a sampling of the photos taken at the scene today.

We will keep you posted as we continue to make progress on city projects.

Word of the Day for Friday, October 31, 2008

gloaming \GLOH-ming\, noun:

Twilight; dusk.

The children squealed and waved and smiled, their teeth flashing white in the gloaming.
-- Evan Thomas, Robert Kennedy: His Life
It was the gloaming, when a man cannot make out if the nebulous figure he glimpses in the shadows is angel or demon, when the face of evening is stained by red clouds and wounded by lights.
-- Homero Aridjis, 1492: The Life and Times of Juan Cabezon of Castile (translated by Betty Ferber)
Arrived at the village station on a wintry evening, when the gloaming is punctuated by the cheery household lamps, shining here and there like golden stars, through the leafless trees.
-- Margaret Sangster

Gloaming comes from Old English glomung, from glom, "dusk."

10th Street and Plaza DO NOT ENTER-- Problem

Many drivers are now disregarding the DO NOT ENTER sign at the intersection of 10th Street and Plaza Street. Because Plaza Street is also Highway 49 Business, I was asked to contact the State Highway Department about the issue.

I took these pictures today. While taking the photos, I noticed many people are following this tradition. They go straight across the double yellow line and past the DO NOT ENTER signs. As you can see, one of the photos show an actual NEAR MISS.

Mr. Ray Woodruff, District Engineer with the Arkansas Highway Department, will be looking into this matter and making a determination on how we should proceed. The State Police have requested swift action out of concern for everyone's safety.

We will keep you posted.

UPDATE -- 1:45 PM OCTOBER 30, 2008 -- HERE'S AN EMAIL MESSAGE RECEIVED FROM RAY WOODRUFF

Mayor,

I will ask our Maintenance Division to send a traffic investigator down to review this intersection for possible revisions needed at this intersection. As soon as they advise me of their findings, I will let you know what they found.

Word of the Day for Thursday, October 30, 2008

hubris \HYOO-bruhs\, noun:

Overbearing pride or presumption.

During his long tenure in the financial world, Friedman has watched dozens of his competitors' businesses killed by hubris born of success rather than by unsound business decisions or adverse market conditions.
-- Lisa Endlich, Goldman Sachs: The Culture of Success
This is the actor's hubris, to imagine the world possessed of a single, avid eye fixed solely and always on him.
-- John Banville, Eclipse
With dizzying hubris, Shelley elevated the vocation of the poet above that of priest and statesman.
-- Peter Gay, Pleasure Wars

Hubris comes from Greek hybris, "excessive pride, wanton violence."

Moore Street Clean-up -- Nellie Wooddridge Area

Nellie Woodridge and customers of her beauty shop have sought assistance for quite some time with the wild overgrowth on Moore Street. Aldermen Tommy Hunt intervened on more than one occasion to assist Ms. Woodridge. Oscar Hoskins and Victor Jordan have worked to get this area the assistance need. Finally, the work has been done:

Sergeant Tommie Bivens Involved in Auto-Accident

On yesterday afternoon, Tuesday, October 28, 2009; Tommie Bivens was headed west on Plaza Street and a vehicle came out from a side street into Sergeant Biven's direct path. Sergeant Bivens was unable to stop prior to T-Boning the other vehicle in the driver's side. Passengers in both vehicles were transported to Helena Regional Medical Center for assessment and treatment. I believe each was treated and released without any major problems:

The city council has approved the mayor's street and drainage improvement plan and here are a few photos of the work now underway:
