Major Water Main Leak Repaired at Columbia and Phillips Streets

The water main running north and south on Columbia Street at the intersection of Phillips Street near the Knights of Columbus building sprang a serious leak in the afternoon hours on Wednesday, April 29, 2009. About 3:00 p.m. the department was notified that water was gushing up from the street. Quickly, the staff sought an emergency locate such that digging could begin to repair the leaking water main and keep quality water service going to each of the residents in the affected area.

After the Arkansas One-Call Crew marked the other utilities lines, our water staff got busy with the Backhoe and Jackhammers.

Eventually, our guys located the broken pipe and placed a "chicago coupling" on the leaking pipe and stopped the leak.

The Police Department assissted with traffic control on this state highway. The Fire Department provided high beam lighting to ease seeing what work needed to be done. Both water departments worked together to get this matter resolved. The East side workers did the work and were assisted in part by supplies and and equipment from the West side department.
