Helena West Helena School Board Meeting November 10, 2009

The Helena West Helena School District Board of Directors met in open session last night to hold its Annual Report to the Public and Regular Board Meeting. The special guests included Dr. Tom W. Kimbrell, Commissioner of the Arkansas Department of Education.

Dr. Dr. Tom Kimbrell speaks at press conference at the State Capitol Tom W. Kimbrell is a lifelong Arkansas educator who was appointed to be Commissioner of Education for the State of Arkansas by Governor Mike Beebe and the Arkansas State Board of Education in September 2009.

Dr. Kimbrell wanted to “dispel” some rumors about the district. He made it plain that there are no plans for the state to “take-over” the district. He also made it plain that the district must continue to partner with the State Department of Education to avoid future sanctions.

The various principals detailed the status of our schools and the areas needing improvement. The principals seem to  have a grasp on the issues contained within the data from our previous test results. With such a grasp, they can and should be armed to use data to produce better results on future test. Of course, this would be excellent for economic development and the overall well being of our community.

The Board granted bonuses in the amount of $2,000.00 to each certified staff member and $1,000.00 to each classified staff member. These monies will likely be available to district staff on November 24, 2009. On other business the board approved various plans submitted by Mrs. Ardelia Echols and Mrs. Betty Willis dealing with Federal Programs and Special Education Needs/Services respectively.
