Word of the Day for Saturday, March 28, 2009

velleity \veh-LEE-uh-tee; vuh-\, noun:

1. The lowest degree of desire; imperfect or incomplete volition.
2. A slight wish or inclination.

To become now a priest was an elevation of sorts; yet the ceremony, as we would soon see, reinforced every contrast between the life he would lead and the life of the high and mighty, for whom the crowds roar and the bands play, courtiers and servants surrounding them to gratify the least velleity, historians on their toes to record their wispiest thought.
-- William F. Buckley Jr., Nearer, My God
The ease of her words, the control of them, was meant to convey to Compton that her wish to know of her real parents was hardly more than a velleity, a thought that would come to one while watering a plant or peeling an orange.
-- Thomas Savage, The Sheep Queen
He does not shout out his wishes or velleities, unless invited by his host to do so.
-- Philip Howard, "Modern Manners", Times (London), September 15, 2003

Velleity is derived from Latin velle, "to will, to be willing, to wish."

LANDFILL WEEKLY DHR MARCH 30, 2009

              WEEKLY Department Head Meeting

Department: Helena West Helena Regional Landfill

 Date: March 30, 2009

 Prepared By: Bob Gaston

 Specific Weekly Activities:

Employees Tommy and Larry come in at 6:30am to start equipment and                           do daily maintenance; Donna comes in at 7:00am and turns on computer.

Once Larry has the working face and road ready he lets Donna start sending trucks down. Donna weighs the trucks and sends the trucks to the cell. Once the truck has emptied the driver returns and is weighed. Donna prints a ticket and the driver comes in and signs the ticket, the driver receives a copy. Each truck goes through this process each time. Donna also does random inspections on a daily basis. As the waste is placed in the cell the process of compacting begins. We start lunches at 10:00 am and go thru 12:00. After lunch we start placing dirt around the working face so we can cover. Trucks are allowed to enter landfill until 3:30pm. After the last truck is weighed out Donna begins adding tickets and balancing with the computer and printing reports.

Donna is usually finished by 4:00pm. After the last truck leaves the operators finish compacting and covering. This normally takes about one and half hours. Each day someone checks the leachate pumps and tanks. We have part time help to take care of litter, grass, office, scales, and other task. We maintain a daily maintenance log on all equipment and make sure hourly maintenance is maintained.

We work during all weather conditions and wet weather adds to the over time. Most weather damage repair is done on Sat.

2. Violent commotion or agitation, with confusion of sounds; as, "the tumult of the elements."
3. Irregular or confused motion; agitation; high excitement; as, "the tumult of the spirits or passions."

The Irish Sea has been polluted, the aeroplanes roar above our heads, preparing for the next war; but this is the work of man. Of course, none of these improbable meetings ever took place in reality. But within the realm of showbiz thaumaturgy, they're perfectly acceptable examples of latter-day digital compositing, wherein it's possible to have anything share a frame of film or video with practically anything else.

-- John Mcgurk, "Devoted People: Belief and Religion in Early Modern Ireland", Contemporary Review, September 1998
