HBF's "Clean-Up Days" Transform a Neglected Historic District

Historic Beaufort Clean UpLast spring, the City Council of Beaufort, South Carolina considered changing its ordinances to give itself the ability to approve the demolition of structures in the city's historic district. But Local Partner Historic Beaufort Foundation, members of the review board, and preservation-minded citizens of Beaufort opposed the change.  They  understood that the problem of blighted houses was a symptom of far larger issues, and that simply tearing down old houses would leave  vacant lots, their own kind of blight. The City Council saw the light and tabled the idea.  Instead, they created a taskforce to assess and make recommendations on how to reverse the decades of decline in a section of the Beaufort National Historic Landmark District known as the Northwest Quadrant. Amongst the 100 recommendations made by the taskforce at the end of the review period was to find ways to haul away massive accumulations of trash littering the neighborhood. Through the coordinated efforts of Historic Beaufort Foundation, neighborhood organizations, and city officials, a series of "Clean Up Days" were launched, with tremendous results.  The city removed over 120 tons of waste! "In short, the clean-up days and monthly meetings have demonstrated that we can do more with less through cooperation among residents, volunteers, and city staff," said executive director Evan Thompson.
