PCCUA to assist parents, students apply for financial aid during College Goal Sunday

Planning to go to college is a major step, and finding the money to pay for college can be a major challenge. At PCCUA-Helena-W. Helena, the Financial Aid Office will be offering free assistance to parents and students during College Goal Sunday.

Set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, in the PCCUA Fine Arts Center, College Goal Sunday is provided for those planning to attend college this summer and next fall and will include refreshments. Barbra Stevenson, PCCUA Director of Financial Aid, said now is the time to begin working on the college financial aid application.

The College Goal Sunday program provides college bound students with free assistance in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the college financial aid application.   Financial aid administrators from across Arkansas will volunteer their time and expertise during College Goal Sunday to help students and families with the process of applying for college financial aid.

Completing the FAFSA is a requirement for any Arkansas student who would like to apply for the new Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship, also known as the Lottery Scholarship.  It is anticipated that over 20,000 Arkansans will apply for this new scholarship program to assist them in paying for college beginning with the Fall 2010 semester.  Students can apply for the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship on the Arkansas Department of Higher Education website at www.adhe.edu, and click on the YOUniversal Application link.

Scott Medlin is the statewide coordinator for Arkansas College Goal Sunday. According to Medlin, "The Arkansas College Goal Sunday program is an effort by hundreds of volunteers from across Arkansas who will come together on a Sunday afternoon in February with the common goal of making sure that the process of applying for financial aid for college does not become an obstacle that would keep any person from pursuing an education beyond high school.  By attending a College Goal Sunday event, participants will receive free assistance in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and will walk away from the event with the satisfaction of knowing they have tackled one of the biggest steps in getting ready to go to college."

College Goal SundaySM was originally created by the Indiana Student Financial Aid Association with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc. and supplemental financial support from the Lumina Foundation for Education. Currently, 39 states nationwide host a College Goal Sunday event. Thirty-eight sites throughout Arkansas will be providing a College Goal Sunday event in their area. A complete listing of all of the College Goal Sunday locations is available at www.arcollegegoalsunday.org
