The 2010 Census will arrive in the mailboxes of more than 120 million households next week. Is your community ready?

We are asking leaders nationwide to take part in the Take 10 Challenge – Inspire your constituents to take 10 minutes to fill out and mail back their 2010 Census forms.

Here's what you can do:

1. CHALLENGE the people in your town, city, county, state or tribal area to respond at a higher rate than they did during Census 2000. Check out how you did in 2000 by finding it on our (http://2010.census.gov/2010census/take10map/). See how it compared to the national average. Tell your people about it!

2. SET UP A FRIENDLY COMPETITION with another area. Think you can beat them in 2010? Set it up, announce it, and use our automatic tracking tools (coming March 22!) and (http://2010.census.gov/partners/toolkits/toolkits-take10.php) to inspire your residents to mail back their census forms.

3. PROVIDE CONSTANT REMINDERS. Let's face it, when the mail comes we don't always get to it right away. Keep reminding the people in your community that they need to TAKE 10 minutes to fill out the very simple, 10-question census form. Use the templates and ideas in the to help (http://2010.census.gov/partners/toolkits/toolkits-take10.php)

4. MAKE SURE YOUR PEOPLE KNOW HOW THEY'RE DOING. Your area's census mail participation rate will be updated daily beginning March 22. You'll be able to download a Web-based "widget" that will automatically update your area's daily rate on your Web site. Post it on your area's Web site, encourage your media as well as others in your community to post it. Be creative. Got a centralized electronic billboard? Update it daily. Community access channels? Get them on board too.

5. TELL YOUR PEOPLE HOW A COMPLETE AND ACCURATE CENSUS WILL BENEFIT YOUR COMMUNITY. Census data help determine how more than $400 billion is distributed to state, local and tribal areas every year. Make sure your community gets its fair share by being counted in the 2010 Census.
