Alderman charged with DWIMIKE LINN ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE
HELENA-WEST HELENA — A Helena-West Helena City Council member was arrested about 1 a.m. Sunday on a drunken driving charge, although the alderman said he had not been drinking. Arkansas State Police Trooper Josh Berry stopped Alderman Bruce Hudson, who is serving his first term, and gave Hudson a breath test to measure blood-alcohol content, then arrested him on a charge of driving while intoxicated. In jail, Hudson refused to take another Breathalyzer test because, he told the Democrat-Gazette, he felt like police were targeting him and that he recalled attorneys in television commercials advising motorists not to. Capt. Nathaniel Jackson of Troop D of the highway patrol was unavailable for comment Tuesday afternoon. Berry did not return a phone call seeking comment. Hudson said the arresting officer did not show him the blood-alcohol content reading from the portable Breathalyzer. Hudson said he was volunteering for the Wild Hog Music Festival in Helena-West Helena on Saturday night and didn't drink any alcohol. On his way home, three blocks from his house, police pulled him over while he was on his motorcycle, he said. "I'm 57 years old, and this is the first time I've ever gotten anything like this," Hudson said. "I was as sober then as I am now. I'm not going to be out on a motorcycle leaving a festival under the influence of alcohol. I was a volunteer. Volunteers are not allowed to drink alcohol." |
